Falls Prevention Awareness Seminars on Sept. 22

Council on Aging of West Florida and sponsor Peoples Home Health will present a free community education opportunity on falls prevention on Tuesday, September 22, the day declared by Florida Governor Charlie Crist as Falls Prevention Awareness Day.

According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (FDOEA), falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths, hospitalizations, emergency department visits and extended health care facility accident-related admissions among Floridians 65 and older. The FDOEA also estimates that more than 125,000 hospital-treated injuries from falls occur annually among Floridians 65 and older, resulting in medical charges exceeding $1.8 billion.

Attendees may choose between a morning session from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and an afternoon session from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Both sessions will be held at Peoples Home Health, 213 East Wright Street in Pensacola. Speakers will include representatives from the Pensacola Fire Prevention Bureau and Peoples Home Health as well as Anna Dyess, Community Health Services Coordinator for West Florida Area Health Education Center and Certified Fall Proof Instructor Dr. Petra Schuler with University of West Florida. Reservations are requested by September 18. For more information and reservations, call 432-1475.
