- 7/18/2008 - Caregiver Training Offered in Century on July 18
Council on Aging of West Florida is offering a caregiver training session on Friday, July 18 from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Century Senior Center/Council on Aging of West Florida Congregate Meal Site located at 6025 Industrial Blvd. in Century. The topic will be Taking Care of Both Caregiver and Care Receiver. The training session is for all caregivers, regardless of the condition the receiver has. The training session, which includes lunch, is free. Reservations are requested to 432-1475.
The training will focus on issues caregivers face and an extensive caregivers manual, which has been designed as a reference guide, will be distributed free of charge to attendees. The manual includes programs and resources available to assist caregivers, tips for caregiving, safety issues, emergency preparedness and how to safely provide physical care, personal care and nutrition as well as how to deal with behavioral problems and grief issues.
The training is part of new programs designed to reduce stress, increase coping skills, provide strategies for effective management of caregiving tasks and enable caregivers to provide high quality care in the home. The programs are sponsored by Council on Aging of West Florida, the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs, and the Northwest Florida Area Agency on Aging.

The topic will be Taking Care of Both Caregiver and Care Receiver. The training session is for all caregivers, regardless of the condition the receiver has. Council on Aging of West Florida will hold a caregiver support group meeting on Thursday, July 31 from 6:00 p.m. to 7 p.m. New members are welcome. There is no cost and the public is invited. Reservations are not required. The meeting will be held at Council on Aging of West Florida’s Pensacola facilities at 875 Royce Street.

- 8/7/2008 - Santa Rosa Caregiver Support Group Meeting - August 7
Council on Aging of West Florida will host a Santa Rosa Caregiver Support Group Meeting on Thursday, August 7 at from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. There is no cost and the public is invited. Reservations are not required. The meeting will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Room 2 St. Theresa, 6451 Park Avenue, Milton, FL 32570. The group meets on the first Thursday of each month at the same time and location. County residency is not required to attend.
The support group is part of new Council on Aging of West Florida programs designed to reduce stress, increase coping skills, provide strategies for effective management of caregiving tasks and enable caregivers to provide high quality care in the home. - 9/19/2008 - Panhandle Charitable Open - Sponsors and Teams Needed to Support Local Charities
The 7th Annual Panhandle Charitable Open will be held on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20, 2008 at the Marcus Pointe Golf Club in Pensacola to raise funds for local charities in remembrance of John Ryan Peacock. The Panhandle Charitable Open is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has raised over $70,000 for local charities such as Child Guardians, Dreams of Joy Foundation, Ensley GED Program, Council on Aging of West Florida, ARC Gateway, Manna Food Banks, Escambia Charter School, Gulf Coast Kids House, and Covenant Hospice. The primary charities this year will be Child Guardians, Council on Aging of West Florida Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, and Gulf Coast Kids House.
The tournament uses a two-day, two-person Best Ball format unique to charity tournament in that it allows each player to play their own ball from tee to green. Teams will be flighted after the first day in order to group teams by skill level. Players can choose to play either Friday morning and Saturday afternoon or Friday afternoon and Saturday Morning. All players and their spouses/guests will be treated to live music and heavy hor d’oeurves after play on Friday evening. The fee for a two-person team is $250.
Teams are asked to register by August 15.
